FAQ for the Lyndonville Air Force Station

Q: What is the Lyndonville Air Force Station Preservation Group?
A: We’re an interest group that takes our spare time to clean the grounds on our own time. We do this so others can enjoy the area & history of the place, without the gates being locked. Vandalism has gotten the gates locked for months at a time, so we try to combat that as much as possible.

Q: I’d like to visit the AFS! Can you let me? Is it open to the public? Am I allowed?
A: That’s great, it’s an awesome place. We can’t give you permission because we’re in no way affiliated with the land or building owners and it’s private property. Going there is at-your-own risk and extremely dangerous. The land owner is Weyerhaeuser Logging, and they encourage recreational use of their land. The building owner is Matt Rubin and he *strongly discourages* access to the buildings.

Q: How do I get there?
A: Easiest way is to hop on Radar Rd in East Haven (The town of East Haven is the BASE HOUSING!) and the alternate way is from North Concord to Victory, and hop on Radar Rd.

Q: Where do I park?
A: You can park in the administration area. There’s a bit of paved area. Try not to block the road, and we recommend not leaving any valuables in your car.

Q: But I want to DRIVE to the towers! I don’t want to hike!
A: Sorry, but no longer an option thanks to the vandals. They dug a ditch, put a 3,000 gallon oil tank in the ditch, then dug another ditch and put huge boulders in it. If you look through our pics you’ll see the massive blockade they made.

Q: When are the gates open/closed?
A: The gates are normally open during late spring until late fall. For status of the gates, you can contact Weyerhaeuser at 1-800-525-5440 and ask them about East Mountain access. If you call and say “I wanna go to the Radar Base!” They will hang up on you.

Q: Is it safe to explore this place?
A: Absolutely not! There is asbestos everywhere, and these are buildings constructed in the 50’s and 60’s and have been neglected since site decommission in the early 70’s. Everything is falling apart and extremely dangerous. The nearest ambulance is over an hour away, if it can make the road. Then an hour to the hospital. A few people have died up there, so we don’t exactly condone exploring if you’re not prepared or know what you’re in for.

Q: How long does it take to hike from Admin to the summit?
A: About 45 minutes up, about 30 minutes down. It’s a relatively easy hike.

Q: How can I get permission from the owner of the buildings to be there?
A: It’s a legal liability unfortunately, and if asked the owner will not give out explicit permission or condone entering the buildings.

Q: I want to go camping up there! Do you have any advice?
A: Many people have camped here, both below the admin buildings and topside (There’s a great spot topside for camping).
